Social Homes for Manchester (SHFM)

Social Homes for Manchester is a campaign catalysed and led by grassroots community groups to increase the supply of sustainable social rent homes in Manchester. The campaign aims to ensure Manchester City Council (MCC) includes a commitment to at least 30% of all new housing developments to be provided for social rent in the new Local Plan with practical and measurable strategies developed on retrofit, empty homes, and community-led housing.

Inner-city exchanges between Community Savers groups resulted in them agreeing to address the increasing exclusion of low-income groups from housing and opportunity in Manchester.  Leaders invited a coalition of organisations (GM Tenants Union, Greater Together Manchester, GM CLH Hub, Mustard Tree, Shelter, and Steady State Manchester) to work with them to hold government and politicians to account for increasing the supply of sustainable homes for social rent.

Residents and VCSE groups have organised to address the approximately 18,000 households on the waiting list for social housing in Manchester (Shelter, 2024) through the SH4M campaign. The latest achievement of the coalition is to establish Manchester’s first Social Housing Commission.
